ANKLE Procedures

The ankle helps support the body’s overall weight as well as contributes to the body’s ability to walk. Ankle injuries significantly limit the ankle’s ability to bear weight and perform regular movements. At Kinese, we are committed to providing you with access to the best orthopedic ankle surgeons in California.

Our orthopedic physicians are equipped to handle a variety of ankle surgery procedures including Achilles tendon repairs and ankle ligament surgery. With Kinese, you will receive luxury VIP care in San Francisco, Santa Barbara and Beverly Hills for your orthopedic ankle surgery.

  • WHAT IS IT: The Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the human body. It connects the calf muscles to the heel bone (calcaneus) through a band of fibrous tissue. An Achilles tendon procedure is a type of surgery to repair a torn or ruptured tendon in the lower calf.

WHAT CAUSES IT: Tears or ruptures to the Achilles tendon typically occur 4-6cm above the heal, but can also occur near its insertion point at the heal bone. While the Achilles tendon can withstand great pressures from running and jumping it remains vulnerable to injury. Most Achilles tears are sports related causing sudden acute pain, swelling and impaired movement.

  • WHAT IS IT: Lateral collateral ligaments support and control movement within the ankle joint. Ankle Collateral Ligament repair is a surgical procedure to remedy cases of chronic or repeated ankle sprains.

WHAT CAUSES IT: Ankles support the entire weight of the human body and are easily susceptible to instability. A major sprain or several minor sprains can leave the lateral collateral ligament susceptible to damage. Chronic or repeated ankle sprains may result from failure or fatigue of lateral collateral ligaments, which contributes to balance and stability when standing or in motion.

  • WHAT IS: Strong fibers called tendons, connect muscles to bones in various parts of the ankle. An ankle tendon procedure is a type of surgery that repairs inflamed or torn tendons.

WHAT CAUSES IT: Tendons in the ankle can be easily susceptible to damage from acute injury, overuse, abnormalities, or disease. While surgery may be avoided by using orthotics and braces, an outpatient procedure may be an effective way to expedite the healing process and alleviate pain.

  • WHAT IS IT: An ankle arthroscopy utilizes a small fiber-optic camera and tiny surgical tools inserted through an incision in the skin to examine and repair tissues inside and around the ankle joint. Orthopedic surgeons commonly use this minimally invasive surgical procedure to evaluate and treat a variety of different ankle conditions.

WHAT CAUSES IT: An ankle arthroscopy is used to diagnose and treat a variety of different conditions in and around the ankle joint. There are multiple causes, conditions and symptoms that may warrant an ankle arthroscopy in order to more accurately diagnose and treat an injury or condition of the ankle joint. Arthritis, fractures, instability, infection and other unexplained ankle symptom are common conditions that may require an ankle arthroscopy in order to accurately determine appropriate action for treatment and care.

  • WHAT IS IT: There are multiple bones that make up the ankle joint. A fractured ankle can mean that one or more of these bones is broken. Fractures can range in severity depending on the number of bones fractured and the ligament damage that may result. Simply put, the more bones compromised, the more unstable the ankle becomes. An open ankle fracture repair is a surgical procedure in which physicians will move bone fragments into their normal alignment. The realignment is held together with special screws and plates.

WHAT CAUSES IT: Ankle fractures are among some of the most common bone and joint injuries. The injury can easily occur from rolling or twisting an ankle, or from direct impact which puts severe force on the joint. A severe ankle sprain can have many of the same symptoms as a broken ankle including immediate pain, swelling and bruising. An ankle injury should always be evaluated by a doctor to determine the best course of treatment.

  • WHAT IS IT: A total ankle replacement, also known as a total ankle arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that most commonly treats severe ankle arthritis. In an ankle replacement surgery, diseased and arthritic cartilage is replaced with an artificial ankle joint. Unlike ankle fusion surgery (also referred to as ankle arthrodesis), joint mobility is preserved and can be a considerable advantage over ankle fusion. Artificial ankle joints are comprised of metal and plastic parts specifically designed to reduce pain and maintain ankle motion.

WHAT CAUSES IT: The need for an ankle replacement procedure most commonly results from severe ankle arthritis in which non-surgical treatments have failed to control pain. While arthritis in the ankle is relatively uncommon, prior injury or damage to the region can leave the ankle prone to arthritis that may interfere with joint function causing pain. Your doctor will determine if an ankle replacement procedure is the best course of treatment for your condition.
